PROFESSION PREPARATION ROUTE
Preparation route for user research

Build a small work file separating the research question, observation and interpretation.
Bound the question
- Write what you want to learn rather than trying to validate a preferred idea.
- State whose experience you seek to understand and who is outside scope.
- Note that a small sample does not represent every user.
Interview outline
- Write a non-leading opening question and one follow-up.
- Label an exercise fictional when there are no real participants.
- Avoid unnecessary personal details or sensitive experiences.
Organise notes
- Put what someone said and your interpretation in separate columns.
- Do not present a sentence you cannot remember as a verbatim quote.
- State the assumption involved when moving from observation to product ideas.
Explain a finding
- Present a finding with its sample scope and an open question.
- Give an alternative explanation and the further work needed.
- Do not present a recommendation as an implemented or measured improvement.
