Explain a career break clearly and briefly

Describe a work interval without turning it into your whole life story. Separate your timeline, the context you choose to share and your preparation today.

Check your own timeline first

Place the dates in your CV, profile and interview notes side by side. Keep month-level or year-level detail consistent; do not extend employment dates to conceal an interval. The explanation helps a reader understand your next step rather than requiring you to justify your life.

Choose the context you want to share

Your break may have involved study, caring responsibilities, rest, job searching or something else. Use only truthful general context that you want to share. You do not need to include personal health or family details in this exercise; prepare questions for an employer separately.

Make current preparation concrete

If you completed genuine learning, a project or volunteer work, state its scope. Distinguish enrolling on a course from completing practical work. If you produced no output, do not invent an achievement; describe your existing skills and the work you are preparing for now.

Rehearse two lengths of answer

Write a two-sentence version first, then choose one example for a follow-up question. Ask a peer to tell you only which period and next step they understood. Clarify the uncertain phrase rather than adding more personal detail.

Turn reading into an output

  1. Create one consistent timeline.
  2. Write one sentence of context you choose to share.
  3. Add a real preparation output or existing skill.
  4. Read the two-sentence answer and remove unnecessary personal details.
