Use three envelopes for relocation costs

Separate recurring costs, one-off costs and a safety buffer so you do not count the same expense twice.
Calculate monthly costs separately
Add rent, utilities, transport, food and insurance for your own circumstances. Use net income. If an offer states only gross pay, do not treat remaining cash as confirmed until the net amount is verified.
Make upfront costs visible
List temporary accommodation, travel, deposits and document preparation separately. A refundable deposit can still require cash at the start. Record the research date for prices and exchange rates in your notes.
Test uncertainty in another scenario
Create a second scenario with higher rent or a later start date. Choose your own safety months; one number does not fit everyone. Do not compare offers in different currencies by their currency symbols alone.
Turn reading into an output
- Separate recurring and one-off costs.
- Record sources and research dates for amounts.
- Create a more demanding second scenario.
